Lunch Rendezvous - SATURDAY August 25, 2018

Postby SandyBallard » Mon Jul 23, 2018 10:40 am

I have heard great things about the Skillet Restaurant in Las Vegas (https://www.giantskillet.com; 623 12Th St. Las Vegas, NM). Since they are closed on Sundays, we will converge there at noon on SATURDAY August 25. If you would like to ride there with a group, meet at the Phillips 66 station at 1660 Roy Ave, Albuquerque, NM (just west of I-25 and Tramway) at 10 am for a prompt 10:15 departure.

I know this ride will involve quite a bit of freeway riding (112 miles, 1.5 hours), but there are some excellent post-lunch rides one could take to enhance the experience. There are two Riding Challenge / Butler Map Gold Roads that emanate from Las Vegas: Mineral Hill and El Porvenir. Or one could also take the scenic route by returning through Mora - Sipapu - Pojoaque - Albuquerque (170 miles; ~3 hours).

Here is a link to a Google Map with all these routes on it:

Here are descriptions of the Riding Challenge Rides from https://loebmwr.org/RidingChallenge.aspx:

El Porvenir Campground - Ride Highway 65 up to the end of the road at the El Porvenir Campground (35.71039, -105.41418). Take a photo of you and your bike in front of the campground sign. This is an exciting road, 1.5 lanes, no centerline, plenty of tight switchbacks and big drop-offs! Enjoy!

Mineral Hill - Ride Highway 283 through the "town" of Mineral Hill and continue to the end of the paved road at 35.63715, -105.42104. Take a picture of you and your bike in front of the signs at the end of the road.

Aside: For those of you who like to ride around in the dirt, you can take a gravel road from the end of this ride to the end of the road on the El Porvenir Campground ride (~15 miles).

Bon Appetit!
