Sandy and Amy, Thanks for picking out such a great place to camp! Although I couldn't ride this time, I'm glad my car was useful for folks to drive the short ways to Cloudcroft to pick up ice and other provisions. Weather could not have been better for camping.

The Camp & Ride to Cloudcroft was a great success! About 20 club members showed up for the 3 day extravaganza, which is a new record for Camp & Ride participation since I have been involved with it. The weather was great; nice and cool at 8700 ft. We had a few sprinkles of desperately needed rain during the night when we were all snug in our tents but the daytime weather was lovely. There were some forest fires in the area but no evidence of smoke at our campground. Stage 2 fire restrictions meant that we could not have campfires to roast our marshmallows, but we managed to have pretty spirited parties nonetheless.

About a half dozen riders met in Albuquerque on Friday morning and rode down together, showing up at the campground around two in the afternoon. Everyone else trickled in at various times, arriving from several different directions. On Saturday, folks went out and rode some of the excellent roads in the Cloudcroft area. In my estimation, Highway 6563 from Cloudcroft to Timberon is about the best motorcycle road in the state; no traffic, silky smooth tar-snake-free pavement, and 40 mph twisties. Great road! The road to Weed was also outstanding. On Sunday morning, folks packed up and returned to Albuquerque, some visiting additional Riding Challenge Roads along the way (Apache Ski Area road, among others).

Enjoy!

Feedback I got from folks was all positive, suggesting that we ought to do this again next year. If anyone would like to support or dispute that idea, let your voice be heard!

If you missed this Camp & Ride, or came and would like to participate in more, join us August 18 at Datil Well Campground and/or September 22 at Wild and Scenic River near Questa.

Cheers,
Sandy

The Cloudcroft Camp & Ride will soon be upon us!

Those who would like to ride down in a group should meet on the west side of the Smith's parking lot on the SE corner of Tramway and Central. The address is 200 Tramway Blvd SE, Albuquerque, NM 87123, USA. Meet at 8:45 am Friday June 8 for a prompt 9 am departure. A suggested route is shown below, but other options are possible and the assembled group may decide to choose an alternate route.

The route depicted above is about 200 miles and should require about 3.5 hours, not including stops.

The Lower Fir Campground is located at gps coordinates 32.96803, -105.73395.

Here is a link to a GPX file for the suggested route

and a link to tips on how to load a GPX file to your GPS

The route includes the Alamogordo-Cloudcroft Riding Challenge Ride. The photo op for that ride is at the Tunnel Vista Observation Site (32.94625, -105.86027), which is included as a waypoint in the GPX file.

See you there!

Hi Betty from Taos:
This Camp & Ride does not involve any off-road riding. There is paved road all the way to the campground and i think even the parking lot at the campground is paved! Sorry you lost your riding buddy but maybe you can find some new ones in Cloudcroft!

Hope to see you in Cloudcroft.

Hi There...
Is the Cloudcroft Camp and Ride mainly for offroad / GS riders? I lost my riding buddy of
23 years last month and need to get my behind back out on the road. I ride an R1200ST, I live in Taos and thought
Cloudcroft would be a good close trip to get my head back in the game and have some fun.
I even invested in the camping equipment required....just don't laugh if I struggle getting
it all up first time out! LOL.

Let me know....Thanks!

Sandy, You sure have made it easy to hang out with the club riders and have fun. Your planning on this appears to have left nothing to chance. Thanks for a great job. I look forward to the rides.

I made a special Google Map of the Riding Challenge Rides near Cloudcroft. How many of these can we get done during the Camp & Ride?

Cloudcroft Camp & Ride June 8-10, 2018

Postby SandyBallard » Tue Dec 05, 2017 10:06 am

The first Camp & Ride of 2018 will take place Friday June 8 through Sunday June 10 at the Lower Fir Group Campsite located about a mile from Cloudcroft. At an elevation of 8700 feet, it should be nice and cool so come on out and beat the heat in the rest of New Mexico.

LowerFirPavilion.jpg
Pavilion at Lower Fir Campground

As with all Camp & Rides, this is a self supported trip which means you need to bring your own camping gear, cooking equipment, food and libations. Water and firewood are available at the site, so don't worry about that. The club is picking up the tab for the campsite, which has a large covered pavilion with multiple picnic tables and will accommodate up to 70 people. If you would rather stay in a motel the Dusty Boots Motel in Cloudcroft (http://dustybootsmotel.com) is only about a mile away and you are welcome to join us at the campsite for social time.

Cloudcroft is about 200 miles / 4 hours from Albuquerque via Claunch and Alamogordo.

There is paved road all the way to the campground. There are several Riding Challenge Gold Roads in the area and we would imagine that folks will go and ride some of them on Saturday June 9.

More info about the campground can be found here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/lincoln ... ecid=34210

Hope to see you out there!
