Cloudcroft is a great place to view the Full Sturgeon Moon on Saturday, August 9th. at 8:27pm. There are both great adventure and street rides as well.
There are hotel rooms available at Cloudcroft that weekend for the non-campers.
We did not reserve the Lower Fir Campground in time; we have three camping options based upon the number of people who register.
1) The Pines campground is right across the street from the Lower Fir, so we could still hike to the Pizza place Friday night for dinner. The Pines is first-come first-serve. Single spots are $32/night which is a bit pricey. However, The National Park pass gives a discount (America the Beautiful!).
In addition, if there is enough interest, Dan and I can get there Thursday and "reserve" one or two of the limited double ($39) or triple ($49) sites. Note that each additional vehicle in this spots also has a $10/vehicle fee. But that does reduce the cost.
2) If no there are only a couple of interested campers, Dan will host up to 3 additional campers at the unimproved campground nearby just north of Pines. He has a portable toilet. There is cell phone service The road is hard-packed gravel FR 568. GPS coordinates to the road are
32.972523, -105.736526
3) In addition, there is the unimproved camping by Alamo Peak which is not walkable from Cloudcroft. It is on paved route 64D. Cell phone service is limited. GPS coordinates to the road entrance are
32.874179, -105.787162
Alamo Peak has the best view of the night sky.
Please register as soon as possible. I will take a survey of attendees to see which option you prefer. Also join the forum discussion!
