14 Topics 3 Replies 17 Total Posts 2024 RIDING CHALLENGE – LEGENDARY NEW MEXICO with some weird stuff mixed in…
Document your visit to 54 different ‘Legendary New Mexico’ sites with a picture of your bike with object listed, or if that is not possible, take a selfie at the spot. Send your pictures to RidingChallenge@LOEBMWR.org to earn points for your visits. The Google Map you will see has a lot of pictures to help you find what you are looking for. You can download the map on your computer or cell phone. Some stops have more than one photo to help you find the location and compose your own pic.
For each section of the challenge that you complete, you will automatically get an extra 5 points, as indicated on the scoresheet. Total of 100 points for the challenge. Collect 25 points and receive a challenge lapel pin. Contest Ends November 30, 2024. Winners will be announced at the Christmas party. REMEMBER to send your pictures to RidingChallenge@LOEBMWR.org to earn points for your visits. Ride safe and have some fun!

0 Topics 5 Replies 5 Total Posts I see that the Pat Garret murder site is on the list. For those interested in visiting the actual murder site, it’s a pretty sandy dirt ride. At the site, there is a plaque, and offrenda shrine for Pat Garret. About 2 miles round trip, but it will need an off road tire.
Start a bit east of the roadside marker on Battan. From the light at Mesa Grande on hyw 70, head south towards the high school. At the high school entrance, leave the pavement and follow the small pole line south The large pole line and the small will share the road for a while, so bear left and follow the large lines road at first. once past the big washout, follow the smaller pole line on the right into the big arroyo. just before the pole line road climbs out of the big arroyo is the actual murder site. In those days, the road to Tularosa followed that arroyo till a few miles east of the murder site.
Pat Garrets grave is in Las Cruces, in the Masonic Cemetary. Grave location can be looked up on the net. If you are traveling past White Sands on your trip, another interesting site is the Fountain Murder site. Pat Garret was brought to Las Cruces and made Sherrif of Dona Anna county to solve this murder. Another bush whack in the desert, no positive solution was ever found. Oliver Lee was tried for it and aquitted. He was tried in the jurisdiction of the new Otero County because it was believed a fair trial was not possible in Fountains home, Dona Anna county.
Lots of speculation as to why Pat was shot, but some believe that it was actually the person who murdered Fountain. Quien Sabe?
Other Garret/Billy the kid sites include Old Messila plaza, where Billy was tried and convicted of murder, before his escape from the jail in Lincoln.
